On 5/27/08 the St. Louis Business Journal reported that the company, Express Scripts, agreed to pay $9.5 million to resolve allegations that they pressured doctors to change perscriptions so that their company made more money with those changes. (Express Scripts enters $9.5 million agreement in drug switching probe) With this agreement, Express Scripts did not admit guilt to the charges. It was reported that the doctors involved believed that the changing of prescriptions would actually save money for the patients and/or their insurers. The lesson learned is that consumers should question and confirm any non-medical reasons for prescripton changes - check the specifics for yourself if you are in the mindset of consumer-driven health care and want to reduce waste in the system.
